Résumé : |
Speaking anxiety of foreign language is one of the most common obstacles
students face in learning English as a foreign language. Many students suffer from
fear of speaking in front of their classmates in the oral expression class, and this is
due to anxiety. This study aims to uncover the main effect of anxiety on students’
oral performance and the main causes of this anxiety. Furthermore, this study aims to
find out the convenient strategies that both teachers and students use in order to
minimize students’ anxiety. It is hypothesized that if third year LMD Students
suffered from anxiety, their oral performance would be affected negatively. It is also
hypothesized that if these students can overcome or reduce anxiety when they speak,
they can improve their oral performance. In this study, two questionnaires are used:
The students’ questionnaire is given to 45 third year LMD students at the department
of letters and English language, University of Mentouri Brothers Constantine. The
second questionnaire is administered to 15 teachers of oral expression at the same
department. The results display that anxiety is a real problem that students suffer
from in speaking English and it really affects students’ oral performance negatively.
Furthermore, third year LMD students become depressed due to many factors;
among them fear of making mistakes, negative evaluation and negative feedback
which hinder them from doing well in their performance. |
