Résumé : |
This study is coducted to explore the effect of mother language tongue (L1) as a learning
strategy on students’ L2 vocabulary learning. The phenomenon of language transfer is
described as the transfer of words from the native tongue to the target language. This transfer
could either result in the positive (facilitator) effect on learning, or result in the interference
(negative) of students’ L2 learning. The relationship between language transfer and learning of
L2 is not much explored in such conditions. Hopefully, this study will bring such event into
limelight, with more focus on the Algerian students by exploring their experiences, exposure
and inverstigating different perceptions around language transfer. This research hypothesises
that if learners use their L1 as a selective lexical source, this would result in better L2
vocabulary learning. Striving towards finding answers to these questions, one research
intrument is adopted: a questionnaire designed using Microsoft Word and administered to the
students in classrooms concurrently to Third Year students of English, University of
Constantine 1. The results obtained from this study demonstrate that students recognize the
phenonmenon of language transfer and are able to exhibit different reasons why they use
language transfer, mentioning of these reasons it is to better express themselves in different
contextual spoken or written interactions, which they think helped them develop more TL or
L2 vocabulary understanding and competence, besides strongly accepting the role of transfer
in their EFL learning. |
