Résumé : |
The present study aims to investigate the learning strategies English Foreign Language
students deploy in their quest to learn new vocabulary. Basically, the study is set to answer
the following research questions: What are the vocabulary learning strategies used by 2nd year
EFL students? And which vocabulary learning strategies are most preferably used by 2nd year
EFL students? To answer these questions a questionnaire is designed and administered to 33
participants drawn from the population of second-year English students at the Department of
English at Frères Mentouri University Constantine 1. The results gained from this study show
that among the vocabulary learning strategies students resort to are: Using bilingual
dictionaries, collaborative discussion of meaning, figuring the word meaning from the
context, using semantic maps and grouping the words together within a storyline to remember
the word. They, also, consolidate new vocabulary using verbal repetition. Therefore, the
findings confirm that students are aware of vocabulary learning strategies. The study
recommends teaching vocabulary as a separate module in itself. In doing so, more time and
space will be devoted to this indispensable language component. |
