Résumé : |
Foreign language teaching and learning requires developing the learners’ different
linguistic skills in order for them to use the language effectively. Having a rich vocabulary is
one of the major factors which help learners perform better in a foreign language classroom
because of its role in helping learners to purposefully make use of the target language. Teaching
vocabulary necessitates the use of some strategies and activities to encourage the students to
learn the target language. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to shed light on teachers
and pupils' attitudes towards using Movies with first language subtitles to teach vocabulary to
foreign language learners. Hence, it is hypothesized that if teachers hold positive attitudes
towards the use of first language subtitled movies, they would use them to improve pupils’
vocabulary learning. For this, two questionnaires were conducted in this research; one was
given to a sample of 03 teachers of English and another to 24 fourth year pupils at Hamoudi
Said Middle School, Constantine. The results of the analysis of the questionnaires reveal that
the majority of the pupils hold positive attitudes towards using first language subtitled movies
in learning vocabulary which would enrich their vocabulary knowledge and creates a new and
enjoyable experience for them. However, teachers do not share the same attitudes, they do not
use such technique and think that there are better and more suitable strategies to adopt than first
language subtitled movies to teach vocabulary in the classroom which does not bear out the
research hypothesis. |
