| Résumé : |
This study tries to shed light on a translation problem, notably, the translation of
idioms from English into Arabic. To tackle this particular issue, we have administered a test
to third year students, at the department of English, university of Constantine. In order to
investigate this problem, we hypothesize that third year English students of applied language
studies at university of Mentouri Constantine, will face problems to translate idioms. To
check this hypothesis a test including ten English idioms has been given to a sample of third
year English students to be translated into Arabic. The results of the test show that most
students have problems to understand and to translate idioms. Most of them do not use the
appropriate strategies that may help them to achieve the right guesses. They stick to word for
word translation, especially when they take idioms out of context, and paraphrase when
idioms are taken into their context. The other strategies are sometimes or not used at all.
Furthermore, the test shows that when context is determined, students are able to translate
better. On the light of these shortcomings, some suggestions and solutions are made. |
