Résumé :	The present research is carried out to shed light on one of the lexical problems affecting the performance of third year students of English, at the Department of English, University of Constantine, when attempting to translate from English into Arabic. This problem lies in the ambiguous nature of English words, particularly synonymous words. In order to investigate this problem, it has been hypothesised that if third year students of English consider the context, they will succeed in translating synonymous words. To check this hypothesis and to achieve the aim of this research, a test and a questionnaire have been administered to a sample of third year students of English at Mentouri University - Constantine. One of the points of focus of this research is how context helps in translating synonymous words.
