Improving Reliability Oral Proficiency |

Résumé : |
The reliability of a test refers to the consistency of its scores. Oral tests are characterised
by the fact that they are unreliable by nature. The role of the present study is to help
improve the reliability of this kind of tests. It aims at uncovering Oral Expression teachers’
views about the importance of reliability of the test scores they obtain, and judge their
awareness of this issue. It aims also at finding whether the marking scheme affects the
degree of reliability of an oral test. In the fulfilment of these aims, it is hypothesised that
reliability in oral proficiency testing would be improved if greater attention is paid to the
marking scheme implemented, and to the construction of the test. To test the validity of
this hypothesis, a questionnaire has been administered, and it has been filled in by twelve
teachers of Oral Expression in the Department of Foreign Languages at the UMC. The
obtained results partly confirm the hypothesis with regard to test construction. The results
also emphasise the role of training examiners in increasing the reliability of the scores. The
marking scheme has been found not as important as the afore-mentioned factors.
Additionally, the results proved that teachers of Oral Expression at the UMC are aware of
the importance of achieving consistent test scores, and that they make enormous efforts in
this domain despite the time constraints they encounter. This study illustrates the
significant role that the training of examiners plays in the improvement of reliability in
testing oral proficiency. Therefore, teachers of Oral Expression should be trained in how to
test learners’ oral proficiency before any oral test takes place. Additionally, they should
achieve well constructed tests that test students’ real level. |
