Résumé : |
This paper presents the impact of a sensitive period in American history which is the 1930’s with its economic depression and the failure of the American Dream on the American novels, taking John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men as a case study. Moreover, it investigates and examines the impact of different social and historical events as the economic decline of 1929 and the influence of the myth of the American Dream on writers of the thirties and these events both contributed to a rich literary production. This study is divided into three chapters. The first chapter gives a historical background of two main features which characterized the social and the economic life of many Americans: the failure of the Dream and the Great Depression, by exploring their different impacts: social, cultural, economic and political on this era. The Second Chapter sheds light on American literature during the thirties, and introduces Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, its background and how the writer was influenced by this era. The last chapter is a social and historical analysis of -Of Mice and Men which demonstrates the presence of the social conditions of working class farmers and the portrayal of the failure of the American Dream in this novel. |
