Reading is a very important skill in learning a foreign language. One way to develop foreign
language learners’ reading comprehension is through presenting them with real language and
the use of authentic reading materials in EFL classrooms. The fundamental purpose of this
study was to determine the effect of authentic reading material on developing EFL learners
reading comprehension. The secondary purpose is to identify the problems that encounter
learners when exposed to a real context. Then, the problem was how can EFL learners
develop their reading comprehension using authentic materials? And what is the effect of
authentic materials on developing learners reading comprehension? The hypothesis was if
learners were presented with authentic reading materials in EFL classrooms that are
appropriate to their level and interest, they would develop their reading comprehension. To
achieve our aims, we adopted the analytic method; we analyzed teachers’ and learners’
questionnaires. The learners involved in the present study are exposed to authentic reading
materials, and they are 2nd year LMD students. The teachers were taken randomly from Jijel
University; English department. The analysis of questionnaires revealed that the use of
authentic reading materials in EFL classrooms helped the learners to improve their reading
comprehension and reading ability.
