Résumé : |
Vocabulary is the building block that any learner needs in his language knowledge construction. For this reason, this research aims at investigating the effectiveness of using songs in teaching English vocabulary. The hypothesis suggests that using songs in EFL classes is a valuable pedagogical tool in improving pronunciation and enhancing the learners’ capacity of vocabulary memorization and retention. This paper provides theoretical arguments and practical support for using English songs in ELT. It is based on an interview for (10) middle Schools teachers and a test for (40) first year pupils of Ibn Khaldoun School - Tebessa. The teachers’ interview showed a higher agreement about the usefulness of songs in pedagogical settings, and this is what was asserted by the results of the test, that showed a significant advance in the pupils’ ability in memorizing and involuntary rehearsing of the three texts they learned with melody. These findings sustained the effectiveness of songs in developing the pupils’ vocabulary background with an appropriate pronunciation that will be retained automatically when necessary. |
