Résumé :	This paper aims at demonstrating and analyzing the failure of the American Dream under the materialistic aspect of Capitalism in Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman. Miller’s play is a perfect illustration of the conditions of the American family during the Great Depression of 1930s and its aftermath. The first chapter attempts to shed some light on the economic and social pressures on the American family during the Great Depression and its impacts on the American society as a whole. The second chapter is devoted to an investigation of Death of a Salesman as a presentation of the concept of the American Dream and its effects on the American family. This chapter deals with various samples that effectively represent the American Dream either with its failure or with its success. The conclusion shows how it is sometimes necessary to take into consideration some historical aspects for an effective interpretation of literary works.
