Charlotte Brontë The Professor hero Victorian society norms feminisation masculinisation femininity masculinity. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The Victorian society was a society of norms and standards and not adhering to the latter made of the non-adherents outcasts. The Professor, Charlotte Brontë‟s novel, just so happens that it delineates an outcast. The hero, William Crimsworth, is deemed as such because he is a feminised man. His situation as a needy, a reliant, a substandard and an estranged man is similar to the Victorian women situation. The present dissertation aims at excavating the feminisation – which is the lack of characteristics specific to masculinity – and the masculinisation – which is the state of having characteristics specific to masculinity – of the protagonist as a hero in a society that has a particular understanding of femininity and masculinity. For this purpose, the present work is divided into two chapters. The first one deals with the situation of women writers in the 19th century and the depiction of their heroes and heroines in general and Charlotte Brontë‟s in particular as it emphasises the emergence of prominent and self-conscious women writers. The second chapter probes into the norms and standards of gender ideologies in the Victorian society and the elements of the hero‟s feminisation and masculinisation through the scrutiny of his life from childhood to adulthood. As a Victorian woman and writer, Charlotte Brontë denounces gender ideologies in her society and criticises the notions of femininity and masculinity. |
