Résumé :	Our study seeks to investigate the reasons behind the difficulties of translating novels that first year Master students of British and American studies at Mentouri university of Constantine 1 face from English into Arabic. The study is conducted on the British and American students of 2016-2017 academic year. In this research a random sample of 20 students was selected to answer a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire contains sixteen questions in order to explore the problems that these students face during the translation of novels. The test was composed of four paragraphs taken from Paulo Coelho’s novel “the pilgrimage”; This test aims at investigating the students’ capacity of understanding English novels. At the end of the study some recommendations and suggestions were offered. The research findings confirmed that if first year Master students were given the appropriate translation strategies and enough hours for translation subject matter, their problem in translation would decrease. The results clearly show that students do have problems in translating novel from English into Arabic due to several reasons, and to solve these problems the university should devote more courses on translation and translation strategies , encouraging the students to follow and practise novel translation in order to have a high level of competency in language
