Résumé : |
Ameliorating the learners’ level in reading and writing in a foreign language needs more
intelligent work and organized programs since he is supposed to reach such an average that
makes him able to deal with the native speakers of that language. The present research is an
attempt to examine the effects of skimming for the main idea on writing summaries. Within
the study, this issue is tested with reference to the relevant theoretical background including
skimming as important reading skill that leads the learner to determine the main ideas of a
material easily, in addition to the skill of writing a summary. It is hypothesized in this study
that skimming for the main idea has an effect on writing summaries. To check this hypothesis,
an exercise was designed and given for a sample of first year students of English at University
Mentouri Constantine and Teachers’ Training School. Data collection and findings give us a
clear view that skimming for the main idea can really affect our summaries; the close analysis
of students’ summaries shows that those who skimmed the text correctly wrote summaries
that contain only the main ideas while those who did not skim the text correctly develop
summaries that contain details instead of key information. Our objective is to show the effect
of skimming before summarizing in order to make students able to summarize correctly the
content of a material. |
