Résumé : |
There are many factors which affect second/foreign language acquisition process. These factors thought to be most important in the acquisition of English as a second language. Age is one of the most important affective factors in second language acquisition. It has received great attention and debate on the part of researchers. While some agree about the existence of the critical period, others do not. This research tries to examine the relationship of the age factor and second/ foreign language acquisition. Accordingly, we hypothesized that younger students, who started learning English at an early age or during their childhood, have certain advantages over older students, who started to learn English after puberty. The educational setting in which this study took place is at the Departement of Letters and English language, at the University of Fréres Mentouri/Constantine. A group of fifteen teachers of English belonging to the said Department was selected to fill in the teacher questionnaire which was mainly about eliciting their views as regards the existence of the critical period. Moreover, a group of thirty good second year students of English was selected as the sample of this research to accomplish the student questionnaire task. The finding of the investigation revealed that both teachers and students are in favor of the idea that a new language is best acquired during the critical period |
