Résumé : |
This study is conducted to investigate the matter of foreign language anxiety and its effect on students’ oral performance in the process of learning. It aims to uncover the main causes of students’ anxiety and then, to find out ways to reduce it in order to perform better orally. We hypothesize that if EFL students feel anxious in oral classes, then their oral performance will be impacted negatively. The research depends on two main data gathering tools, which are a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire was directed to 15 teachers at the Department of Letters and English language, University of Mentouri-Constantine, and another one was administered to 50 second year LMD students of English (which was drawn from a population size of 343 students) at the same department, in addition to the students’ test scores to compare between their oral performance scores and their level of anxiety. The results displays that most foreign language students have a moderate level of anxiety, particularly in the speaking skill. Furthermore, their anxiety in oral performance is caused by many factors, among them communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation, which impact their learning and lead to a poor performance in the classroom. The results also represent different strategies that students and teachers can use to lower foreign language anxiety and help students to improve and develop their level of oral performance |
