Résumé : |
In the past, cities were a symbol of civilization and culture, because the city has had a
genuine personality due to the good faith of citizens. However, in the twentieth century, this
symbol changed meaning for modernist poets. This dissertation examines this new image of
the city for modernists, taking the "The Waste Land" as an example T.S. Eliot's "The Waste
Land" describes the city as boring and pointless despite the development of science and
technology. This work shows that, in the post-war, the city was characterized, according to
"The Waste Land", by pollution, chaos, the deterioration of morals and values, and that the
interest of humanity became purely materialistic. Thus, Eliot as an individual who lived at
that period and experienced the difficulties and suffering of urban life, is longing for the
personality of the city which was lost between the mechanical routine of life, and the
selfishness of citizens; so he suggests as a solution order and peace in the city which can only
be achieved through the unity of people and the restoration of the beauty of nature |
