Résumé : |
The current piece of research aims at investigating the effect of rehearsing memorised lexical
phrases on first year students` speaking fluency. The hypothesis set forth at the beginning of this
study is that the more students memorise and rehearse different genres of lexical phrases, the
better their speaking performance would be. Aiming to test this hypothesis, a questionnaire was
submitted to teachers (a sample of eleven teachers of oral expression and other modules) and
another one submitted to students (a sample of forty first year LMD students)at the department of
English at the University of Mentouri, Constantine, Algeria. The results obtained from the
analysis of the questionnaires, reveal that there is a positive correlation between rehearsing
memorised lexical phrases and students speaking performance; a fact that both teachers and
students agreed upon to a large extent. On the basis of our results we confirm the importance of
memorising and rehearsing chunks to facilitate speech under pressure, and give speakers a feeling
of fluency. |
