Résumé : |
This work is about the complex relationship between Britain and Europe; Britain has often been called “a reluctant European” because during the post war era she refused to give a proper attention to the European Union seeing rather her future with the Commonwealth and the United States. But during the 1960s and the loss of most of her colonies, Britain turned her attention to Europe seeing in the Union the only way to secure her future. The British application for membership faced many problems both at home and within the European Community. At home opposition was found in the Labour Party which against this entry and in the European Community opposition came mainly from France. Finally, in 1973 Britain became a member of the European Community after many years of dispute with Europe. |
