Résumé : |
In this research work, we have highlighted one of the social dogmas in the American
South. The history of the region was characterized by its racial practices but religion made
this history even worse. Light in August by William Faulkner is a novel that explores clearly
the dangerous role of Protestant theology. The followers of this religious ideology were
characterized by their rigidity and their conservative way of life, these features helped
intensifying the relationship between blacks and whites. Faulkner created a series of
characters that represent fully the corrupt religion of the South; they used God’s name to
justify their discriminatory practices. White Southerners’ mania is derived from Puritanical
sources and applied to discriminate between people. We shall see exactly how religion
became a means to oppress the black race.
In order to define clearly the relation between race and religion, we have followed a
combination of descriptive and analytical approaches to cover all the aspects of the research
historically and literally. In the first chapter, we have provided a historical overview of race’s
chronology. The second chapter defines the particularity of religious beliefs in the South and
its relationship with race. In the third chapter, we have analyzed Light in August as a case
study that tackled race and religion from the same perspective of condemnation. |
