Résumé :	The majority of the students face a range of difficulties that result a significant weakness in producing acceptable texts: writing a paragraph or essay, many researches and studies have confirmed that writing skill is very important but it is complex and difficult. The aim of this study primarily is to find out some of the factors that hinder significantly the ability of third-year students of English in Mentouri Brothers University to write correctly and acceptably; and then to analyze and interpret the results of this study. So why this shortcoming especially third year students in writing skill? And what needs to be done to improve the situation? In order to accomplish this study, we relied on two questionnaires; the first one is administered to the third year teachers of written expression and the second one to the third year students. The objective of this procedure is to make sure the problem, and the obtained results confirm the validity of questions and reveal seriously deficient in the writing skill (written expression) among students. The reason is due, according to the results of questionnaires, to the teacher and student alike and summarize some of them in the following: adoption of teachers different approaches to teach written expression, lack of motivation to write, a lack of reading skill, and finally the impact of native language on the writing skill in English among students. Based on the results obtained, we proposed a few suggestions that may help improve student performance in writing
