Résumé : |
The main purpose of this research work is to explore the effectiveness of using educational
games as a teaching strategy to improve vocabulary level of second year LMD students of
English as a foreign language. This research work also seeks to investigate the effect of using
educational games on the learners’ motivation and classroom atmosphere. As a first step, a
hypothesis was set as follows: if students learn vocabulary in the writing class through
educational games, their level of achievement would improve. We strongly believe that
vocabulary is something which can be acquired successfully if it is practiced through
educational games which have proven to bring in relaxation and fun for students, thus help
them learn and maintain new words easily. In order to prove the hypothesis, three means of
research were adopted, first; the teachers’ questionnaire was administered to ten teachers of
written expression at the department of foreign languages for the need of gathering detailed
information about the strategies they use when teaching unfamiliar words in their lessons and
their concern about the affective side of the learner, and whether they use scrambled words
game and cross word puzzles as a teaching strategy to teach new vocabulary items in their
classes. Second, a test and a questionnaire were given to a sample of twenty second year
LMD students of English at the department of foreign languages at Mentouri Constantine
University; the principle reason behind using this test is just to compare the results between
the two groups; the control (10 students), and the experimental (10 students). The obtained
results showed that there was a considerable improvement in comparison with the exercises
given to the control group. Furthermore, and during the accomplishment of the test, students
have confirmed that scrambled words game and cross word puzzles are wonderful strategies
for gaining a large vocabulary store |
