Résumé : |
The purpose of this dissertation is to examinethe misrepresentation of women in
Whole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel.
The discussion is based on the play The Lion and the Jewel and other African writers’ works.
This work is divided into two major parts: Part oneanalyses major African writers’
presentation of female characters. Part two analyses whole Soyinka’s misrepresentation of
female characters in The Lion and the Jewel.
The myth that the place of women is exclusively at home and more specifically in the
kitchen is widespread all over the world. An even more negative myth is found in Africa; the
participation of women in public affairs might lead to social disaster. Chapter one discusses
not only the characterization of women by major male writers but also examines the position
and status of women in African society, Women’s oppression, education and women in
politics. It also tackles the emergence of female writers defending the image of African
women, and an overview about the female characters presented in Whole Soyinka’s works in
general.
The second chapter is divided into two parts:the first one examines the representation
of female characters in The Lion and the Jewel without neglecting male characters, drawing
attention to the contrast inthe representation of men and women in male writings. The second
part is devoted to the Womanist movement with an overview on Alice Walker’s life and
works and how she contributed in the creation of the Womanist theory. The chapter ends with
the Womanist perspective towards the misrepresentation of women in the Lion and the Jewel |
