Résumé : |
Despite the fact that foreign language speaking anxiety is a common phenomenon in the
teaching of English as a foreign language, teachers usually give no importance to anxious
students, and often relate their unwillingness to participate in speaking tasks to factors such as
lack of motivation, or low performance. This dissertation aims to contribute to the literature
on language anxiety and to provide components, causes, and effects of foreign language
speaking anxiety stemming from students’ fear of negative evaluation from their tutors and
perception of low ability. It is hypothesized that if students experience language learning
anxiety, it will affect their performance in oral classes; consequently, the learning process will
be inhibited. Using qualitative and quantitative analysis, data were gathered by means of an
observation that included thirty third year English students at Constantine University 1, and a
questionnaire that has been given to forty students from the same grade. The analysis of the
results proves that anxiety affects students’ performance in oral classes, notably, foreign
language learning. |
