The present study seeks to investigate the main writing difficulties and problems that are encountered by students shedding light on the problem of writing long sentences which result from their mother tongue interference. For this it is hypothesized that if second year students avoided mother tongue negative transfer, they would write effectively in English. Thus, in order to check this hypothesis, a questionnaire, a pretest and a posttest have been administered to a sample of 24 second year students of English at the Department of Letters and English Language at the University of Mila. The results have revealed that almost all students wrote long English sentences and they failed in constructing them because they think in their native language, and then they translate their thoughts into English. The results also have shown that the hypothesis has been confirmed. In this respect, it is recommended that students should avoid transferring their mother tongue writing patterns into their English writings.
