This dissertation examines the autobiographical elements in Carson McCullers’s
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter in order to show the interaction between the authors’ own
life and her first novel. It focuses mainly on the novel as autobiography by means of its
events, setting, themes, and a set of characters. Moreover, this work studies the characters
of the novel from different sides. It depicts the author’s personality within the characters
she creates, and how she tackles them as minorities and handicapped characters at the same
time. Generally speaking, this work sheds some light on how The Heart Is a Lonely
Hunter, and especially the most autobiographical of all characters, Mick Kelly, reflect
McCullers’s thoughts, ambitions, attitudes, and personality |
