British Literature Love and sex, the sexual behavior as a form of political dissent sexual repression |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This paper examines the themes of love and sex in George Orwell’s novel
Nineteen Eighty-Four and how the author treats them, in order to show the viability of
the use of the sexual behavior as a form of political dissent and resistance against the
state. In a world of total submission, people are allowed only to love their invisible
leader, Big Brother. They are utterly stripped of their humanity and most importantly,
they are sexually repressed. A citizen called Winston Smith grows to know more than
he is supposed to and eventually his inquiries lead him to question the authority of big
brother. By chance he comes to understand the objectives of the Party’s sexual
repression and subsequently decides to do what Big Brother forbids. He engages in a
romantic relationship with a woman called Julia and indulges in promiscuity with her.
As he is in the peak of his relationship with Julia, he understands that his behaviors
have become totally political |

Spanish Civil Ernest Hemingway Whom |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This dissertation aims at inspecting the features of the Spanish Civil War though For Whom The Bell Tolls; the famous novel of the American novelist Ernest Hemingway. To achieve this purpose, it is first necessary to draw a reference to particular aspects of the author‟s artistic life beginning with his early career at Paris where he had the opportunity to interact with eminent British and American writers and improve his literary abilities. After that, we will deal with the factors of his distinctive fondness of the Spanish land and people that is considered as the main inspiration behind the emergence of For Whom The Bell Tolls which he wrote to express his disgust of the Spanish Civil War. The specificities and the tragic effects of this self interest conflict appear in this novel through the dreadful experiences of the characters from both opposing factions and certain episodes such as the inefficiency of the military leaders. Since For Whom The Bell Tolls is a fictional piece, we had also to examine whether it is a reliable source to read about the Spanish Civil War and whether Hemingway, as an advocate of one side of the war, is objective. |
