Résumé : |
This research deals mainly with Edna Pontellier’s struggle to find her essential “self” within the cultural and the social constraints of her society. In fact, the question of identity is very important for Kate Chopin; that is clearly demonstrated through the frank portrayal of a woman’s emotional, intellectual and sexual awakening. However, such portrayal shocked the sensibilities of the time and destroyed the author’s reputation and career because women in Louisiana where The Awakening is set were regarded as the legal properties of their husbands. So, this work traces a picture of a female psychology by exposing an issue of selfhood which concerns Edna Pontellier. The aim is to find out the real causes behind this new vision of “self” and internal awakening and its consequences. This research also attempts to show to what extent the main character, Edna Pontellier, reflects the writer’s personal experience. In this novel, Chopin writes about the search for independence, self-identity and solitude which are reflections of her own biography |
