Résumé : |
This research was conducted to shed light on one of the issues related to phrasal
verbs. That is, avoidance of phrasal verbs. It seeks to look into this phenomenon
in relation to students’ interlanguage development. The complex structure and the
puzzling meanings of phrasal verbs often cause problems to students who
repeatedly tend to misuse them. For that, it was presumed that when students’
interlanguage develops, they will be able to overcome such problems. Hence, two
groups of students differing in their level of education were targeted to form the
population of the present research. Two tools were chosen to carry out the
empirical study: a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The test aimed at
examining the real use of the avoidance strategy among both groups of the
sample, while the questionnaire intended to elicit students’ personal opinions on
this subject. The obtained results show that although students’ interlanguage
improved, it cannot help much to overcome the problems encountered with
phrasal verbs. Thus, they are most of the time confused and misused. |

Résumé : |
This study seeks to investigate and evaluate the English writing skills of Algerian employees
at HYENCO Company in Algiers. It also attempts to examine on a more specific level the
common issues they face in writing business emails. To reach this aim, the research
hypothesizes that since English is not given enough consideration in the Algerian business
and economic environment, employees of these sectors are prone to face difficulties in their
day-to-day business interactions. To check the validity of this hypothesis, two research tools
are used: an electronic questionnaire addressed to HYENCO employees and a qualitative
analysis of professional business emails written by the same employees. The findings of this
study confirm that the subjects face difficulties at their workplace in writing professional
emails in terms of language and structure. Since English is the international communication
language in foreign affairs between countries and corporations, Algerian employees must
have an adequate level in English to communicate effectively. It is suggested that employees
do lots of reading, self-teaching using mobile applications in addition to socializing with each
other at the office but most importantly, they should attend special courses for Business
English offered by their companies or in institutions of language learning. |

guessing meaning |

Résumé : |
The present research aims at investigating the significance of ,The Guessing from Context,
strategy among first year university students of English in general and attempts to analyse their
attitude toward unfamiliar words within a text in particular .In order to reach the main goal of
this study and check the validity of the hypotheses, two tests are administrated for 45 students,
one of them is a pre -test and the other is a post-test .After the data analysis, the obtained results
reveal that, despite the unfamiliarity of most of the words , students succeeded in correctly
guessing the meaning of the words from the context during their reading process. As a result, the
research hypothesis which claims that the use of contextual clues as a method would help
students to understand the unfamiliar words is proven to be correct. |
