That is, avoidance of phrasal verbs. It seeks to look into this phenomenon in relation to students’ interlanguage development. The complex structure and the puzzling meanings of phrasal verbs often cause problems to students who repeatedly tend to misuse them. For that, it was presumed that when students’ interlanguage develops, they will be able to overcome such problems. Hence, two groups of students differing in their level of education were targeted to form the population of the present research. Two tools were chosen to carry out the empirical study: a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The test aimed at examining the real use of the avoidance strategy among both groups of the sample, while the questionnaire intended to elicit students’ personal opinions on this subject. The obtained results show that although students’ interlanguage improved, it cannot help much to overcome the problems encountered with phrasal verbs. Thus, they are most of the time confused and misused.
