The present dissertation attempts to investigate the impact of teaching culture in developing students’ pragmatic competence. It is widely acknowledged that learning a language involves more than mastering the grammatical and lexical system. It also involves extra linguistic knowledge or pragmatic knowledge. To show how the learners’ pragmatic knowledge can be developed through teaching culture, a test was administered to Master 1 LMD students to examine their pragmatic competence, and a questionnaire was administered to the teachers to identify the methods, approaches, and techniques applied in classrooms. The analysis has revealed that teaching culture cannot be ignored either by teachers or by students. The deficiencies noticed in the learners’ communicative competence of Master 1 students at Constantine University 1 were the result of their cultural weaknesses and lack of pragmatic knowledge. This proved the importance of teaching culture through the adaptation of the intercultural approach to improve students’ pragmatic competence |
