Résumé : |
The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the role of self-esteem in enhancing
students‟ communicative competence. Third-year students of English encounter a variety of
problems that prevent their communicative level from being effective. One major problem is
that these students have a low level of self-esteem, in the sense that they evaluate themselves
as weak and incapable. For this reason, we hypothesize that students‟ positive evaluation
about themselves and their abilities may affect their communicative competence and that
teachers‟ focus on affective aspects may help in boosting students‟ self-esteem for effective
communication. To examine this hypothesis, two questionnaires have been administered to
twenty teachers and forty students at the department of letters and English language,
university of Constantine 1. The results obtained show that the majority of teachers consider
the concept of self-esteem crucial in learning in general and in enhancing students‟
communicative competence in particular. They argue that students with a healthy level of
self-esteem can communicate effectively and they usually attempt to enhance their students‟
self-esteem. Besides, the findings show further that students who trust their capacities and feel
confident of their own abilities may fulfill their communicative goals. The results of this
research work corroborate the hypotheses postulated |
