The present study aims at investigating the students' difficulties in the use of the Past
Simple tense and the Present Perfect tense and the reasons that stand behind this
confusion. In order to reach our purpose we hypothesize that if students are aware of the
grammar rules, they would not be then confused between the past simple and the present
perfect tenses. To check this speculation, a grammar test is given to First Year students at
the Department of English at University of Constantine 1, where the students are asked to
write the verb between brackets in the right tense form either in the past simple or in the
present perfect. The analysis shows that the students do face a problems not only in the form
but also in the use of both tenses. The main objective is to draw the students’ attention to this
problem, and help them overcome it through suggesting some recommendations |
