Résumé : |
Learing English vocabulary by learners with French background is of a special problem. The present study investigates the effect of French on performance in English of fourth-year students in the department of translation at the University of Mentouri, Constantine. It is concerned with the problem raised by formally similar words between French and English, namely the problem of deceptive cognates. The aim of this dissertation is to shed light on that problem which encounters our language students and to remind teachers about the importance of teaching false cognates existing between French and English. Our study is centered on the assumption that students with French background will be deceived by false cognates as the result of pairing between any two similar words existing in English and French. In order to check this assumption, a test is administred to find out to what extent students are able to translate false cognates from French into English correctly. The findings of this test indicate that most students were influenced by French in their translation into English and this confirms our assumption in this dissertation |
