It mainly questions the situation of blacks in white America from the point of view of Ralph Ellison. It searches for the reasons behind the blindness of blacks, the advantages and the disadvantages of being visible and invisible; it also talks about racism as the main cause of the invisibility of blacks. This thesis discusses invisibility and blindness in all the three stages of unnamed black man‘s life (college, work and activism) in order to answer the question: to which extent the themes of blindness and invisibility are revealed in the novel?
