Résumé : |
Poor vocabulary banks and inefficient word-attack strategies impede students from
achieving a good level in learning second or foreign languages. Furthermore, encountering
a word once or twice does not ensure its memorization and later recall. Hence, searching
for effective strategies that enable learners to comprehend and remember words is of
paramount importance. From here stems the interest in the present study which attempts to
explore students’ awareness and use of mnemonics to promote vocabulary learning.
Moreover, it aims at investigating the usefulness of such ways in developing students’
word stores. This study hypothesize if first-year LMD students of English at university of
Constantine 1 show awareness of mnemonic strategies, then they are likely to use them to
enhance their vocabulary. For these reasons, a questionnaire is administered to a sample of
fifty first-year LMD students at the University of Constantine 1, during the academic year
2012-2013, to bring insights into their real opinions on and attitudes towards mnemonics.
The analysis of the findings reveal that very few mnemonic strategies are put into use by
students even though they believe them to have a positive impact on vocabulary
development. |
