Résumé : |
The present work aims at investigating the effect of specific praise on developing foreign language leaners' self-esteem to better their speaking ability. This subject matter is opted for investigating because the affective side of the learner matters as well as the linguistic one, especially when teaching the speaking skill. In fact, students' self-esteem may be enhanced in the speaking classroom, if the teachers use specific words/ expressions to praise their students. In order for this assumption to be cheked, two questionnaires are administered to both third- year students and oral expression teachers of the English language at the University of Constantine, to gather information about the importance of self-esteem in the speaking classroom. In addition to this, the questionnaires are used to collect data about the effect of specific praise on developing the students’ self-esteem. The analysis of the data reveals that the students need to enhance their self-esteem in order to develop their speaking level in the classroom. However, the effect of specific praise on self-esteem could not be checked because the great majority of teachers do not use it. Indeed, students receive only general praise. In spite of this fact, the findings show that general praise has a positive effect on the students' self-esteem in the speaking classroom. |
