Résumé : |
This research work aims at evaluating the effect of listening lessons on the teaching of English as a foreign language at the university level and their usefulness as an input for the acquisition of new vocabulary items. To achieve such an aim, we rely on two questionnaires handed to both first-year students and oral expression teachers at the university of Constantine1. The students‟ questionnaire attempts to investigate students‟ strategies of learning vocabulary and their behavior toward the exposure to English language through intensive listening and its effect on their vocabulary improvement. The teachers‟ questionnaire seeks to collect data about the techniques they use when dealing with unknown words in their lessons, to see whether they provide their students with some listening materials, and whether their students‟ encounter and learn a number of new words in every listening lesson. The results of this investigation confirm the hypothesis and show that learners proved that they are able to learn nearly all the unfamiliar vocabulary items presented in a particular listening material. students have also manifested a great enthusiasm in the listening lessons. The analysis of teachers‟ questionnaire clearly indicates that not all oral expression teachers questioned are using listening lesson, taking into account the fact that not all the laboratories at the university of Constantine 1 are equipped by the appropriate listening materials. However, al most all the teachers questioned consider listening lessons to be a comprehensible input for language acquisition as they create a favorable and motivated environment for the acquisition of new vocabulary items. |
