Résumé : |
Learning new vocabulary is a hard process; it requires time and efforts. It becomes even harder if students do nothing but listening to their teacher, write the new vocabulary, and
try to memorize it without really understanding. For that, in most of the times, this task does not receive the required success as students forget the words being taught after a while. On the other hand, learners nowadays are seeking for innovative and funny ways to learn. That is why they like to be engaged in ‘playful’ activities or educational games which can be more fruitful in building their knowledge. Since learning the language vocabulary as a major value in the four skills of the language (reading, writing, listening and speaking), using educational games can be the best solution to attract learners’ attention and make the process of learning vocabulary easy for them. From here, comes interest in this topic.
This study aims at investigating the effect of vocabulary games on students learning of new words. It is hypothesized that if first-year students are taught new vocabulary items via games, they are more likely to learn them. Two research means are used in this study: questionnaire and an experiment. The former is intended to collected data about teachers’ opinions about and use of vocabulary games in the language classroom. The latter (the experiment) includes a pre-test to evaluate students level, a treatment to train students in a set of descriptive words and expressions via games for the experimental group or via activities for the control group, and a post- test to assess students progress in both groups and see whether games were more effective than activities or not.
The findings have shown that the students in the experimental group have performed better than those in the control group in the post-test. Therefore, games proved to be useful while teaching vocabulary and tus they should be an integral part of language classroom. |
