Résumé : |
This dissertation deals with the use of irony in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice which
aims to criticize the social class system of Regency England. Jane Austen – through the
characters, settings and discourses of this novel – inclines to reflect the social prejudices and
class-consciousness that were deeply rooted in the mode life of Regency society. Initially, this
paper presents a brief historical overview on Jane Austen’s society - mainly her biography, a
concise general idea about the Regency social class system and Jane Austen’s writing style.
The second focus of this study is made on the use of Irony and its different types in Pride and
Prejudice in embodying Jane Austen’s attitudes, thoughts, and views about social class
differences. The purpose of my study is to show the significance of irony used in Pride and
Prejudice reflecting Jane Austen’s viewpoints on social status of her society. Therefore, the
present study aims to help the reader acquire a full understanding of Austen’s attitudes on the
principles and social biases of the society to which she belonged |
