Résumé : |
This study explores the relationship between the personality trait (extroversion and introversion)
and students’ oral performance. It attempts to check whether students’ personality trait
(extrovert/introvert) affects their speaking skill. A students’ questionnaire is designed and
administered to second year students at the department of English, University of Constantine1, in
order to analyze their personality and its effects on their speaking skill during the oral expression
classes. The study attempts to answer the following questions: 1- Are second year students of
English extroverts or introverts? 2- Do second year students of English consider the fact of being
extroverts rather than introverts affects positively their performance in Oral Expression classes?
It is hypothesized that “Second year students consider the fact of being extroverts rather than
introverts affects positively their speaking skill”. The results of the questionnaire reveal that
second year students of English are extroverts. The results also show that they believe that there
is a strong relationship between the personality trait ‘introvert/ extrovert’ personality and their
oral performance. |

The present study investigates „master one‟ students at the department of English, University
of Constantine 1, awareness of the difference between translation and transliteration and the
effect of their awareness on their translation of British historical terms. The study attempts to
answer the following questions: -To what extent are students aware of the difference between
translation and transliteration? And -To what extent does students‟ awareness of the
difference between translation and transliteration affect their translation of British historical
terms? A questionnaire and a test have been administered to a sample of nineteen „master one‟

research tools indicate that the majority of students are unaware of the difference between
translation and transliteration and that their lack of awareness does not affect negatively their
translation of historical terms. Therefore, the first hypothesis is confirmed and the second one
is disconfirmed. |

Politeness in language is regarded as a set of restrictions and conditions that control verbal behavior in speech (social) events whereas polite requests are verbal expressions in which the speaker asks the listener to do something for him/her. This study aims at identifying the different verbal patterns of polite requests, translating those verbal patterns from English into Arabic in order to show and examinethe differences between polite requests and their equivalents in Arabic at the level of structure, illocutionary force and politeness markers.To achieve these objectives, the study assumes the following: There is a one to many correspondences between polite requests’ structures in English and Arabic - The different structures of polite requestsaffects the realization of their illocutionary force- There is a one to many correspondences between politeness markers in English and Arabic. In order to test the validity of those hypotheses, a corpus based approach was adopted. The corpus consists of nine utterances (polite requests) which have been translated into Arabic; the choice of the polite requests was mainly based on the different realizations of those requests in English language. Yet, different politeness markers in English have been translated into Arabic. The main findings of the study are: there is no one to one correspondence between polite requests in English and Arabic-There are less politeness markers in English than in Arabic and the translation of polite requests from English into Arabic doesn‘t affect their illocutionary force and the attention of the speaker.In the light of these results, some recommendations have been made and some suggestions have been put forward for future studies and researches |
