It sheds light on the difficulties that students face in performing in English because of translating from French into English. We hypothesize that if students had background knowledge about the phenomenon of false friends, they would avoid making negative transfer and, they would be able to improve their translating from French into English as a means to perform in English. To check the validity of this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test are administered to a sample of first year Master students at the Department of Letters and English Language, Mentouri, Constantine 1. The results show that the majority of the students are not aware enough of false friends, and they do not pay attention to the similarities and differences and how they can be used successfully. In addition to that they are not able to give the right equivalents of the French words given in the questionnaire and the test. On the basis of the results obtained, we recommend that teachers give more importance to false friends in their teaching and raise the consciousness of students about this problem so that they can avoid falling easily in the trap of similarities across French and English which do not always facilitate learning.
