Résumé : |
The present study aims at exploring the relationship between classroom participation and the improvement of learners‟ speaking proficiency. It investigates the possibility of raising learners‟ speaking fluency by encouraging active classroom participation. The present study is based on the hypothesis which states that if teachers give their students opportunities to participate actively in the classroom and encourage them to do that frequently, their language fluency would develop. In order to test the forementioned hypothesis, a descriptive exploratory study is carried out. The means of data collection used are; two questionnaires and a classroom observation. The questionnaires are administered to a case study of forty-one third year LMD students who are randomly selected, and to ten teachers who have taught oral expression for third year classes at the English department of Fréres Mentouri University of Constantine 1. In addition, the classroom observation is conducted with one of the third year groups, in order to get more insights about what is really happening in a classroom setting. The obtained results of both the observation and the questionnaires are found to be highly significant which confirmed the researchers‟ stated hypothesis. The analysis of data obtained, revealed that both teachers and students consider classroom participation as an important strategy in improving the speaking skill. Based on the findings, it is suggested that creating a motivational atmosphere inside the classroom, using different interactive activities, and designing group work can be recommended for teachers of English in order to promote their students‟ fluency. |
