Résumé : |
Setting the novel three years prior to the first Reform Bill of 1832 and publishing it four years
after the second Bill of 1867, raise the debate about considering Middlemarch a historical
book. The purpose of this study is to show the representation of the first Reform Bill of 1832
in George Eliot’s Middlemarch through the historical approach. In this novel, Eliot presents
the major political events dramatically and indirectly through an interrelated web of
characters. She also shows the conflict between the Whigs and Tories over Parliamentary
Reform. The study allows the reader to have a deep understanding of the major events that
preceded the passage of the first Reform Bill. In this respect, the present study helps the
reader to acquire a thorough knowledge of Eliot’s perspective of politics and the historical
background of the early 19th century and the values of the Victorian society to which she
belongs. |
