In The Color Purple, Walker goes beyond the description of Afro-American women’s bitter suffering. She provides a solution to every enslaved woman to free herself from the evils of the patriarchal domination through the example of her protagonist. Celie is capable to change her status of a sexually abused ‘slave’ to a physically, spiritually and economically free woman. Alice Walker does not only dare to highlight homosexuality, but also to celebrate lesbianism as a way to liberate the lives of women who have been objectified.
