Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating the impact of Algerienstudents’first language
(Arabic) on learning English. The sample consists of 30 students of English of first year at
university ,brother mentouri,Constantine 1.Thus, it hypothesizes that the interference of
English as a foreign language learners’ mother language (Arabic)will lead to the overuse of
the coordinating conjunction ‘And’. The hypothesis wasevaluated by an analytical study
inferred from the results of a test and the two questionnaires. The analysis of the results of
the test revealed that learners commit errors in their writing especially the overuse and
misuse of the coordinating conjunction “And”. The results obtained from the
questionnaire addressed the students ,revealed that students think in Arabic before
generating ideas in English. This allowed us to explain the overuse of the conjunction
under study in their writing .In addition to that, the majority of Written Expression
teachers, who answered teacher questionnaire, agreed on the interference of Arabic
(negative transfer) in the students writing . Accordingly, the hypothesis was validated and
confirmed |
