She also shows the negative effects of the First World War on the British society. To further explain these effects she draws a parallel between two characters one sane, the other insane. This parallel enables her to compare and contrast the lives of two people from different classes. She also uses it to explain that the distance between sanity and insanity is short and that the concerns of the sane and insane are similar. Woolf has created Septimus as Clarissa's double, but in fact they are both her own doubles.
