Résumé : |
This study is designed to investigate and analyze collocation mistakes in EnglishArabic translation made by students of English at University of Mentouri,
Constantine 1. It aims at exploring the difficulties encountered by students when
they translate collocations from Arabic into English. The study also aims to identify
the reasons behind such a difficulty and find practical solutions to solve it. It also
assesses the degree of relationship between the learners’ awareness of collocations
and translation with a particular reference to the collocations with the verbs ‘to tell’
and ‘to say’. The study attempts to answer the following questions: To what extent
are students aware of collocations of Arabic/English translation? And, to what extent
students’ awareness of collocations affects their translations? It is hypothesized that
"The students" unawareness of collocations would seriously affect their translations.
To conduct this study, two research tools are used: a diagnostic test of specifically
designed the Sentence Fragments to be translated from Arabic into English by third
year students at the Department of Letters and English Language, University of
Constantine 1. And, a questionnaire is designed to explore the students’ awareness
of collocation and its translation and which is administered to the same sample. The
research data and findings revealed that the majority of the students could not
translate collocations correctly because they lack awareness of collocations. |
