Résumé : |
The dissertation in hands attempts to portray the psychological sufferings of American
women in the late nineteenth century, through Chopin‟s protagonist in The Awakening, Edna
Pontellier. The study is divided into two parts; the first chapter is a general review of the
historical background about women‟s sufferings from gender segregation and deprivation of
many rights. This first chapter also deals with the beginnings of women rights movement.
The second chapter deals with Edna‟s gradual awakening and her struggle for love and
personal freedom. The novel foretells the life of a young lady who was living with her
husband like a machine that he owns, the young lady, Edna, starts to discover her body desires
and also her potentials when she was vacationing at Grand Isle with a young man and far from
her regular responsibilities and her bossy husband. The aim of my study is fulfilled when
dealing with Edna‟s change of mood and attitudes because it can be clearly understood that
male domination and society expectations caused women to suffer from her life before and
within marriage to her life during and after that summer vacation at Grand Isle. |
