The present research is carried out in order to investigate whether M1 students face
problems in translating Arabic tenses into English, in more particular the translation of the
Arabic past tense into English. For this reason, we hypothesize that if M1 students have a
good mastery of English and Arabic past tenses, they would successfully translate them from
Arabic into English. To check this hypothesis, this research is both quantitative and
qualitative. It makes use of two main research tools, one test and two questionnaires. While
the fist questionnaire is addressed to 05 teachers of translation to examine how students
translate past tenses from Arabic into English, the second questionnaire is addressed to a
randomly selected sample of 30 students of Master 1 students of English to examine how they
face the problems in translating the past tense from Arabic into English. In addition, a test is
carried out. It is divided into two sections. In the first one, students are asked to translate 1
Arabic passage into English, while in the second, they are asked to translate 12 Arabic
sentences into English. The obtained results show that students find difficulties in translating
the Arabic past tense into the English past tenses; they usually resort to merely the English
simple tense. Therefore, the learning and teaching of both Arabic and English grammar in
translation classes is of great importance and deserves more attention in order to improve the
students’ translation product |
